Middle School

From the Middle School Principal's Desk
Dear Students and Parents,
We hope you had an opportunity to join us this past Wednesday evening for our Back-to-School Night. We trust these virtual meetings proved to be informative and allowed you to learn more about how our teachers are helping your children to grow academically this year.
Season 1 Junior Varsity Sports (Only Grade 8)
Although we are not yet able to start our MS after school athletics, we are excited to share that we are able to get going with our Fall Junior Varsity (JV) activities soon. Grade 8 students were recently sent emails detailing how to try out for those who are interested.
MS Curriculum Night
On Tuesday, September 14 from 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm, the Middle School will be hosting a curriculum night via Zoom (link here). This is an opportunity for parents to learn more about our core subjects’ curriculum as well as our assessing and grading practices. We will also share information about how we assess using levels of proficiency and what this will look like in PowerSchool (our online grade book). We hope to see you there!
Middle School Counselor - Parent Coffee
Please join our Middle School Counselors on Tuesday, September 14, from 8:00 am - 10:00 am for our next Parent Coffee - Let's Get It Started. It will be a time to welcome new parents, greet our returning parents, meet your counselors and talk about topics for our parent coffees for the year. We hope you will come and join us! Invite a friend! We look forward to connecting and learning and growing together this year! Please use the ZOOM LINK to join us!
Student Photos: September 20 - 23
School photos will be taken for students on Monday, Sep 20, through Thursday, Sep 23. Please check the schedule here (also on the MS Office Teneen page) to find out what day you'll have your photo on. We ask students to dress to impress on that day and that their choice of clothing be in line with our school dress code.
Parent Advisory Forum Meeting
Near the end of this month on Wednesday, September 22, from 8:00 am-9:00 am via Zoom (link here), we will hold our first PAF meeting this year. This is an open meeting for all MS parents interested in learning more about the Middle School. Its primary purpose is to facilitate conversation between the school and home and to provide a forum for parents to provide feedback to the principals. During these meetings, all are welcome. If you have a “burning question” that you would like to ask about, be sure to submit it via this online PAF form and we will do our best to answer it during our next PAC meeting. Hope to see you there!
Memory Art Project
For the past few years, our MS students have been involved with an initiative called the Memory Project. The Memory Project is a nonprofit organization headquartered in Wisconsin to support youth around the world who have faced substantial challenges, such as neglect, abuse, loss of parents, violence, and extreme poverty. Since the project began in 2004, more than 100,000 students have created portraits for children in 44 countries. By participating, our art students were invited to create and donate portraits to youth living in India who have lost their families, providing them with meaningful mementos of their youth.
Last week, we received a video that the Memory Project team made for us, with footage of the portraits students made being hand delivered to these children and to share the collective joy and excitement of all the children together. Seeing how they react when they receive these works created by our students is truly heartwarming, it shows our students making a real difference in the world and gives me hope for the future. We hope you enjoy the video too!
Upcoming MAP Testing in the MS
On September 29 and 30, Middle School students will begin taking a standardized assessment called the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) in the areas of reading and mathematics. These are adaptive tests, meaning that as students answer a question correctly, the next question becomes more difficult. If they answer a question incorrectly, the following question is easier. Upon completion of these tests, students will be emailed a breakdown of their performance, based upon the level of difficulty for the correctly answered questions (these are called a RIT scores).
Students will take both tests on the same day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Testing dates are as follows:
Sunday September 26: Group A students (only)
Monday September 27: Group B students (only)
Please find below a handy guide to better understanding MAP testing:
A parent’s Guide to MAP (English version) (Arabic version).
Sincerely,
Rob Gohr
