From the Middle School Principal's Desk

Dear Students and Parents,

Thank you to all our parents who were able to join us for our virtual parent conferences this week. By working together, we are better able to provide a consistent approach to helping our students experience success. This next quarter extends from Oct 28 to January 13 (end of semester 1). Just a reminder that today, Thursday, November 4 was not a school-day for students, so this Sunday, November 7 will be a day 2 for students in MS.

As your children progress through this year, they may experience both celebrations and disappointments. Such is life, however, throughout these times it is important to help them foster a growth mindset (which is a way of viewing challenges and setbacks). Individuals who have a growth mindset believe that even if they experience challenges, their abilities aren’t set in stone; their skills will improve over time with practice and persistence.

Success should be measured by our growth and the learning achieved. If not there yet, not to worry; there is plenty of time (but keep at it!). If your child is already achieving at a high-level, help them to set their next goals. By focusing on growth, we learn to take chances, reflect on our learning, and seek out new challenges.

Have a great week everyone!

Student Progress Reports for Quarter 1 (August 23 – October 27)

Our first quarter progress reports will be available in PowerSchool for viewing by this Sunday. In an effort to reduce the number of emails sent home from school, we will not be emailing home progress reports. Instead, a tab will be accessible on PowerSchool (called “Report Card”) which will contain students’ quarter 1 report card.

To view the report, click on the Report Card tab accessible on PowerSchool (Not Teneen) which will contain students’ current progress report (see below):

A progress report by definition is a snapshot in time of your child’s learning. Our purpose in sharing this information is to communicate how students are progressing with their academic standards, to provide a context for self-reflection and goal setting, and to provide evidence of their learning habits and their impact on academic achievement.

Student reports will indicate where your child is currently with their learning habits, a section detailing overall progress in each subject, and a section detailing how your child is progressing towards proficiency in individual subject strands. A ‘strand’ is a grouping of like-standards, and a standard represents what we expect a student to know or be able to do. There are no teacher comments on progress reports at this time (comments will appear on the semester report card).

Progress report time is a time to celebrate learning as well as set goals for the future. While student achievement levels are important, it is equally important to comment on the effort students put forth as they strive to meet their goals. Developing this growth mindset is an important part of not only encouraging students but also empowering them to do their very best.

Student Learning Habits

In each subject, students are given feedback on their Learning Habits (LH), which have a direct impact on their academic progress. There are three habits that we focus on in Middle School and recently we’ve re-examined what each looks like when assessing students. Please find included HERE descriptors for each of our learning habits.

Middle School Counselor Coffee: Tuesday, November 16

Please join our Middle School Counselors on Tuesday, November 16 from 8:00am - 9:30am for our next Parent Coffee -Friendships: From Forming to Norming. This Parent Coffee will be live and online via Zoom. All Parents are welcome. During our time together we will talk about what it means to be a friend, how parents can support their children as they form friendships with others as well as the stages of friendship from forming to performing. Parents will have an opportunity to pair and share, learn and grow together. We are all in this together! Please find our ZOOM LINK HERE.

Student DragonCards: Needed to Access Campus

All students who attend ASD have been issued a school photo ID called a DragonCard, which contains a Smart-chip that provides them to access campus, allows them to make purchases on campus, borrow library books, and use photocopiers as needed.

We need students to carry their DragonCard with them to school to help reduce these issues. In an effort to help, we will run a weekly report of students who have 3 consecutive days of missing ID cards. We will then notify parents to let them know that if their child reaches 5 consecutive days without their ID, we will automatically re-issue the student a DrsgonCard and deactivate their old card. The cost of the replacement card is QR50 and will be deducted from the family account. Our hope is that by the first reminder, families can help us to find ID cards and use them to access our campus. We appreciate your support with this.

Reminder from IT to MS students: upgrade your operating system to macOS Big Sur

A recent email was sent to students about needing to update their computer’s operating system, however, we still have a few that need to complete this. The OS has been tested and secure. This upgrade is required to make sure your OS is compatible with the latest and greatest applications we use at ASD, although do not run this upgrade at school. We ask that you do this from home as this upgrade process may take up to two hours to perform and would tie up your computer if done at school. Thanks for your help in this!

MESAC Swimming Championship!

Update November 4, 2021

The ASD Dragons swim team is participating in their MESAC Championships from Tuesday, November 9 through Thursday, November 11. This year the event is virtual with racing being held at the six schools around the region and results being reported at the end of each day. The results will be combined and scored each evening and by the end of Thursday, we will know the individual and team champions for MESAC swimming.

There are more than 30 members of the swim team who have been training four sessions a week since the beginning of the year. The team is quite strong and should be in the running for the overall team title. There will be some excellent individual results, all contributing to the team's point tally.

The swim team would love the support of the ASD community. Racing will take place each afternoon starting at 4:30 pm and running until just after 6:00 pm. We are hoping to live stream the events but watching in person and providing some loud cheers would be awesome.

We hope to see you out on the pool balcony next week. If you want a front row seat we are always looking for help on deck with timing the events. Please send Jeff Slater (jeff.slater@asd.edu.qa) an email if you are available any day to help out.

The team appreciates your support and we look forward to seeing you next week. Go Dragons!
