From the Lower Elementary Principal’s Desk

Dear Parents,

This week we welcomed our Pre-K 4 and KG students back to school on a daily basis. I would like to extend a special thanks to Pre-K 4 and KG parents whose children moved into new sections for all their support and understanding. We are very happy that all the students have settled in well and have adjusted to coming to school every day. We remain very hopeful that we will have increased daily attendance in Grades 1 and 2 and we are continuing with our efforts to bring all students back to campus.

Physical Education Learning Highlights

Prepared by Mr. Mike Pratley and Mr. Paul Clayton - LES Physical Education Teachers

The year is off to a great start with students showing excitement for physical activity and play. Students have learned physical education class rules and routines and also how ASD Values apply to physical education.

Pre-K 3

Students had one session in their own classroom with dance, jumping and balancing activities before venturing to the multi purpose room (MPR) where they explored the space and learned about station rotations through number, color, and ‘move like an animal’ activities. They learned that the floor of the MPR has different colors that equate to grass (green), sand (beige) and the ocean (blue) and the different ways they can move between them.

Pre-K 4

Students have been introduced to simple locomotor skills (skipping, sliding sideways and galloping) as well as learning how to rotate through different stations. Stations have included a balancing circuit, striking balloons with the hands, and walking on age appropriate stilts.

KG, Grade 1 & Grade 2

Students have been practicing locomotor skills and have recently finished their first jump rope unit. They have learned how to turn the rope (both forward and backward) and the most effective ways to jump and balance. They are trying to achieve the grade level goal (KG = 1 each way, Grade 1 = 2 each way, Grade 2 = 10 each way). Students have until the end of the year to reach the grade level goal and will revisit the unit on several occasions throughout the year. In addition to this, students have started working on large ball skills, which focus on ball handling (manipulation, dribbling, rolling) as well as throwing, catching, bouncing, passing and shooting.

Physical activity is more important than ever right now and we appreciate parental support to ensure children are active every day.

Upcoming Virtual Parent Session

We will be holding a parent session on Thursday, October 7 at 10:30 am focused on Math. Mrs. Carol Little, our Math Coach and Coordinator, will be presenting about the importance and the progression of problem solving and math fact fluency from Pre-K 3 through Grade 2. Information will be shared about questions parents can ask their children to reinforce and extend math learning, in addition to games that can be played at home so the entire family can enjoy math together. This Zoom meeting can be accessed on the day by following this link.

Meeting ID: 966 4514 8550
