From the Lower Elementary Principal’s Desk

Dear Parents,

This week we welcomed our Pre-K 3 students back to school on a daily basis. It has been great to visit their classrooms and feel a sense of normalcy at school again. Starting this upcoming Monday, September 20, Pre-K 4 and KG students will start daily attendance, with students being moved to new sections that were opened at each of these grade levels to meet the ministry cap of 15 students per class. We remain very hopeful that we will have increased daily attendance in Grades 1 and 2 and we are continuing with our efforts to bring all students back to campus.

Professional Learning Day - Sunday, September 19 - No school for students

All faculty will be engaged in professional learning and team collaboration on Sunday, September 19. The specific focus of the day will be on engaging faculty in professional learning about effective collaboration, in addition to working as grade level teams and specialist teams on instructional goal setting. Teachers will engage in analyzing student data to determine areas of potential growth around which to form instructional goals. Please note that there is no school for students on Sunday, September 19.

Grade 2 Learning Highlights: Prepared by Rani West-Singh - Grade 2 Level Leader

Grade 2 students have been working on a Social Studies unit called: Leadership in our Community. The essential questions of this unit are: Are leaders important? What are leaders like? and How can I be a leader? Through these questions, students identified what qualities make a successful leader and why leadership is important in our communities. Through read-alouds, short videos, team building activities, and acting out scenarios, students were able to identify leadership characteristics such as listening, being responsible, solving problems, and having a growth mindset. Students also articulated how leaders model the ASD Values and how they themselves are leaders in their everyday lives. Students found that the ASD Values of Honesty, Respect, Responsibility, and Compassion help ensure that everyone is safe and valued in a community. Students created and shared posters through Seesaw about ways leadership is shown every day. They could use the different examples throughout the unit to identify and explain how everyone can show leadership in big and small ways.

In Language Arts, students are continuing to build their reading and writing stamina by independently reading and writing for longer periods of time. Students have been writing personal narrative books about true stories that happened to them. In word study, students reviewed their Grade 1 knowledge of phonics, focusing on the short vs. long vowel sounds and beginning and ending blends. In Math, students are working together to solve problems. This collaborative problem solving is helping to build perseverance and mathematical communication. Students are working to build fluency within 20, while applying those strategies to addition and subtraction problems to 100.

Cub Scouting is fun for the whole family. In Scouting, boys and girls start with their best right now selves and grow into their very best future selves. It’s fun, hands-on learning and achievement that puts kids in the middle of the action and prepares them for today – and for life.

Looking for a program for both boys AND girls where children from Kindergarten through Grade 5 learn tangible and intangible skills through activities such as camping, skits, community service, building, and more?
