Lower Elementary
September 9, 2021
From the Lower Elementary Principal’s Desk
Dear Parents,
Earlier this week we announced the full re-opening of Pre-K 3, Pre-K 4 and KG to parents of students in those grade levels. Starting on Sunday, September 12, all students in Pre-K 3 can attend school on a daily basis. Pre-K 4 and KG students will start daily attendance on Monday, September 20.
With enrollment in each of our Pre-K 3 classes now at 15 students per class, which meets the Ministry of Education maximum for class numbers, all students in Pre-K 3 will be able to remain in their same classes with their same teachers and attend school daily. This is not the case for Pre-K 4 and KG, as most of these classes are over 15 students. In order to provide all students with the opportunity to come to school every day, a new section has been opened in both Pre-K 4 and KG. Students from existing classes have been moved into the new sections based on an automated randomized selection process.
We are very excited to welcome our Pre-K 3, Pre-K 4 and KG students to school every day. At this time, we are continuing with our school efforts for increased daily attendance in Grades 1 and 2.
Approaches to Learning
The ASD Elementary School "Approaches to Learning" is an evening session for parents to explore what teaching and learning look like at the Elementary School level. This annual event has traditionally been referred to as "Curriculum Night" until 2020. Last school year, the Department of Teaching & Learning and the team of Instructional Coaches made a shift in presenting the curriculum to our families in a way that better aligns with the intentional change in roles and responsibilities of the Instructional Coaches. This approach highlights the heart of all that we do; emphasizing a learner-focused model. Instead of talking ABOUT the curriculum (the standards, benchmarks, assessments, pacing of learning, resources, etc) research highlights the greater importance of talking about how the learners engage WITH the curriculum. Our Director of Teaching and Learning, Heather Vlach, and the 4 Instructional Coaches will share highlights about how we approach teaching and learning at ASD and how our learners are embraced with their needs at the forefront of all instructional practices. We look forward to you joining us for this event, which will be hosted via Zoom, as we collectively look at our Approaches to Teaching & Learning.

Cub Scouting is fun for the whole family. In Scouting, boys and girls start with their best right now selves and grow into their very best future selves. It’s fun, hands-on learning and achievement that puts kids in the middle of the action and prepares them for today – and for life.
Looking for a program for both boys AND girls where children from Kindergarten through Grade 5 learn tangible and intangible skills through activities such as camping, skits, community service, building, and more?
