Lower Elementary

December 9, 2021

From the Lower Elementary Principal’s Desk

Dear Parents,

This has been another busy and learning-filled week in the Lower Elementary School. Students, across grade levels, continue to be highly engaged in learning and I can confidently say that this upcoming Winter Break will be a well-deserved holiday for everyone.

Qatar National Day

On Wednesday, December 15 we will be celebrating Qatar National Day in the Lower Elementary School. Students will be involved in a variety of learning-focused activities, centered on Qatar and Arab culture. We encourage our students to dress in Qatar colors on this day to show their national and school spirit. We are looking forward to a learning and fun-filled day.

Winter Break Class Parties

Winter Break class parties will be held at every grade level on Thursday, December 16. These class parties are aimed at celebrating students’ learning during the first half of the school year.

Pre-K 3 Learning Highlights

Prepared by Mrs. Tracy Garber, Mrs. Melissa Jenkins & Mrs. Hannah Staley

Our youngest ASD Dragons have been very busy using their inquiry, discovery, and exploration skills in order to learn about wheels. Some of our guiding questions have been, “What do we know about wheels? What do we want to find out? How do we use wheels? How do wheels help us?”

At the beginning of the unit, the children eagerly shared what they knew about wheels and what they would like to find out. We sang songs about cars, buses, and bicycles, and took a walk around the school to see what else we could find that had wheels. We also started to think about what wheels are used for and what they can do. Some fun activities involved the children painting with cars, making tire tracks with shaving foam, and creating a bus collage.

We continued the unit by talking about how wheels help us get to places such as school, and how wheels help us move things from one place to another. For example, strollers have wheels to help us move babies, and shopping carts have wheels that help us gather food in a grocery store. If a lot of people need to go somewhere, a bus might take them there.

We are currently learning about how wheels move, how we can make wheels, and how wheels are used in wind turbines and pulleys. We discovered that wheels aren’t just for cars! We further explored these concepts by creating steering wheels out of paper plates, making pinwheels that move with the wind, and experimenting with gears. We also had fun riding the tricycles around the playground, observing how they work, and how they move us from one place to another.

Our final week will have us reviewing the different types of wheels as well as racing the different wheeled vehicles in our classroom to see which ones will roll the fastest and the farthest. This may end up being our most fun experiment so far this year!

I wish you all a relaxing and enjoyable weekend.

Sincerely,

Dr. Lana Al-Aghbar
