From the Upper Elementary principal's Desk

Dear Upper Elementary School Parents,

I hope you had an enjoyable extended weekend last week. In the Upper Elementary School, our theme of spreading thankfulness was alive and well throughout the school. Students were busy brainstorming what/who they appreciate and how they can demonstrate thankfulness in their lives. In addition, students enjoyed a Thanksgiving Party with their classmates.

A few weeks ago, our Technology Integration Specialist, Martin Reinsmoen, led a Parent Coffee topic on Internet Safety and Responsible Technology Usage. Over this past week, our administrative team has been working with several students on appropriate technology usage issues. Each of these incidents has involved the misuse of WhatsApp. This phone-based app allows individuals and groups to have conversations on a technology device. In Grades 4 and 5, a few students have used this platform as a place to use foul language, put-downs, or other words not aligned with ASD’s Values and expectations.

To give you some additional information, WhatsApp has a legal age restriction to 16 years+. If your child does have access to a phone, there are a couple of steps you can take to promote safety. You can check their discussions, texts, and activity/browsing history. You can also require your child to include you in any chatting that is done with their friends. If kids know their parents are going to join a discussion, it promotes that the language and topics on those discussions stay positive and of the quality your family expects.

Thanks for being diligent in monitoring your child’s technology footprint. We will continue to teach our students the importance of our ASD Values inside our school and in the digital world.

As always, thanks for your partnership! Have a great weekend and upcoming week.

Regards,

Mr. Toby Tebo

Upper Elementary Principal
