From the Middle School Principal's Desk

Dear Students and Parents,

Happy December! Only two more weeks before the winter break! For those of you who are considering traveling prior to the upcoming break (or who are planning on a late return), we urge you to have your child complete a pre-arranged absence form (available in our MS Office). There will likely be upcoming assessments during these next couple of weeks that students will need to be aware of.

I love the weather outside this time of year. It’s great to see our students back on the soccer pitch and playing outside in our courtyard (ask your child about Gaga ball!). Having everyone back together again has been great! It’s also presented us with a few challenges too.

During the past year, we got used to smaller groups and school every other day. This year, we are all back, every day, and have had to re-learn how to be together. At the start of this year, I thought this would be straightforward. I’m learning that it’s not. We still have some anxious students (and even some adults) who are uncertain about the future. This anxiety can reflect in how we interact with one another, and if left unchecked, can lead to some poor decisions. It’s important to remember that we are not yet where we need to be. We’ll get there, but do need to be patient with one another. In the meantime, we continue to build on our relationships with one another and support each other when needed. I’m thankful to be able to work in such a great place!

Have a great week everyone!

Memory Project Exhibit

MS Art and Design students have just completed portraits that were created to honor the courage and perseverance of children in Cameroon whose lives have been severely impacted by an ongoing civil war. We want these portraits to help the children feel valued and important, to know that many people care about their well-being, and to act as meaningful pieces of personal history in the future. The original portraits are on display in our MS/HS Lobby, copies are also on display on the Grade 8 floor. The originals will be sent to the children in Cameroon in December.

DragonCards: Needed to Access Campus

All students who attend ASD have been issued a school photo ID called a DragonCard, which contains a Smart-chip that provides them access to campus, allows them to make purchases on campus, borrow library books, and use photocopiers as needed.

We need students to carry their DragonCard with them to school to help reduce these issues. In an effort to help, we will run a weekly report of students who have 3 consecutive days of missing ID cards. We will then notify parents to let them know that if their child reaches 5 consecutive days without their ID, we will automatically re-issue the student a DragonCard and deactivate their old card. The cost of the replacement card is QR50 and will be deducted from the family account. Our hope is that by the first reminder, families can help us to find ID cards and use them to access our campus. We appreciate your support with this.
